"Leibniz Talents": Award for Master's thesis

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy congratulates Leon Minne, a research associate at the Institute of Structural Analysis, and all other award winners on receiving the "Leibniz Talents" award. This award recognizes outstanding theses by students of Leibniz University Hannover. On December 17, 2024, the Vice President for Teaching and Studies, Prof. Dr. Julia Gillen, was able to present a total of 21 awards to students and one student group.

Leon Minne received the award for his master's thesis titled "An Investigation on Utilizing Kirchhoff's Rod Theory for the Modeling of Mooring Lines in a Fully Coupled Simulation Framework for Offshore Wind Turbines." In this work, Leon Minne examines the formulation and implementation of nonlinear beam models for calculating slender structures, as found in modern wind turbines. The focus is on the application to mooring lines of floating offshore wind turbines, which interact with the surrounding water. In his thesis, Leon Minne demonstrates how a carefully chosen formulation can significantly increase both the model's consistency with the physical behavior of the real structure and the model's efficiency in numerical computations. He used theoretical derivations and numerical calculations for this purpose.

As a research associate at the Institute of Structural Analysis, he is currently further developing the methodology for the design and simulation of modern wind turbines. This includes the formulation of new nonlinear beam models, which are to be implemented into the in-house computation software at the Institute of Structural Analysis.

About "Leibniz Talents"
The funding for the awards has been provided by the Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft Hannover e.V. and the Christian Kuhlemann Foundation. The aim is to make high-performing students and student groups with innovative initiatives more visible and to encourage further development. The award is endowed with between 200 and 500 euros per award. This year, outstanding achievements in master's or bachelor's theses or in legal specialization papers for category 1 were honored, which were completed between the winter semester 2023/2024 and the summer semester 2024.
